As you may have seen yesterday, Governor Ducey and Superintendent of Public Instruction Hoffman presented a plan to provide COVID-19 metrics and re-opening guidance to all schools by August 7. Those metrics and guidance will assist school leaders and governing boards to make decisions on re-opening their campuses for in-person learning.

With less than 25 days left before the start of the school year, our families, students, and staff need and deserve a plan now. After reviewing the Governor’s order, Horizon Honors leadership has decided we cannot wait until August 7 for the metrics and guidance to make a decision about in-person learning.

We have analyzed current COVID-19 metrics for the county, received information from Superintendent Hoffman’s office and the Arizona Charter Schools Association, and reviewed CDC guidelines. At this time, we believe that once the metrics and guidance are published on August 7, the advice will be to start our school year via remote learning.

Therefore, we have decided that ALL Horizon Honors students in Grades K-12 will begin school via temporary 100% distance learning  on Monday, August 17. This decision will allow our teachers to focus solely on offering robust remote curriculum while we continue to prepare the campus to offer the safest experience possible when students are permitted to return.

After the metrics and guidance are received from the state, we will utilize that information to make decisions for a return to in-person learning. Because we do not yet have the metrics, we cannot predict when in-person learning might be advisable in our area. We will still offer remote learning after in-person learning starts as was already presented in our learning options for this school year. We will ask families to re-commit to their preferred learning choice prior to re-opening the campus.

- All Horizon Honors students will start the school year via our remote learning program, taught LIVE by Horizon Honors teachers.

- Students will attend school remotely during school hours and attendance will be taken.

- An update will be sent next week with comprehensive details regarding remote learning.

Part of Governor Ducey’s order requires schools to provide onsite supervision for any student who needs a place to go during the school day. This is NOT instruction. It will be a space on campus where students will complete their school work during instructional school hours. It includes supervision from a Horizon Honors staff member in a socially distanced area with masks required for all participants. More details about this requirement will be provided next week.

In addition, Club Horizon will be available (for a fee) before and after school for students in Grades K-6, should we have enough students enrolled to keep the program open. Club Horizon enrollment for August 17 – 31 must be completed HERE and no later than August 1 so we may ensure minimum capacity is met.

Finally, we know many of our families are waiting for our student information system, PowerSchool, to be enabled for access. We are making final adjustments to class lists and will send another email next week when PowerSchool is once again available.

We cannot wait to have all our students back on campus, as we know the ideal way for children to learn is at school, with their teachers and their peers. We do not take these decisions lightly and will work around the clock to make both our remote and in-person learning opportunities the quality experiences our families expect from Horizon Honors. Thank you for your continued patience and support.
